Over the last 5 years we have been working on songs that explore our Caribbean roots as influenced by NYC’s vibrant electronic music scene; these combine lush tropical sounds with introspective lyrics that wander through whimsy, melancholy, escapist daydreams, and irrational fears, creating a sense of contemplation that veers into the surreal.
We feel that it’s finally time to record these songs and we hope to do it in a professional studio environment with producer Lawson White known for his work with new music ensembles Alarm Will Sound and So Percussion. He’s also worked with Chromeo, Matmos, Bryce Dessner (The National) and Glenn Kotche (Wilco)… and, most importantly, Shakira.
As a creative percussionist, Lawson is able to approach things from a musician’s perspective, making this project a collaborative dream. For this project Balún will also collaborate with Bushwick-based design agency Eye Bodega on the album artwork and other goodies.
Thanks to everyone involved in making this project happen and extra special thanks to Gabriela Benedit, Eddin Martinez, Mariné Pérez, Lawson White, and Ariel Zavala.
We’ve got a lot of cool rewards and we hope you can be a part of this project!
++Once again we’re playing the Solo Dame Indie Pop +NRMAL + Epicentro LAMC showcase! This time around we’ll be joined by more bands from Puerto Rico! Our good friend NO CARRIER will be manning the live analog visuals for this one too! Come check out the show and our new songsssssss++
++Third show of the year with NO CARRIER! This one is special because we’ll also be joined by drummer extraordinaire Shayna Dunkelman handling live electronic percussion. Also a close buddy of ours is going to perform that night. You might know him as Amigos Poderosos 😉 ++
Filmed on location in Puerto Rico and directed by Joel Perez Irizarry, the video features an unexpected turn of events in the friendship of two girls during the course of one night in Santurce. We are very excited and happy to share this video with you as it was a labor of pure DIY love.
