— Balún

Live video of Camila at El Teatro en el El Museo del Barrio (NYC). The building used to be an orphanage decades before. Some say that you can still listen to children’s laughter at night. This was a special interactive Balún concert for children and adults that incorporated live visuals, instrument making and audience participation. For this song we were joined by Julio Cesar Morales from the experimental puppet theater company Y No Había Luz (http://http://www.ynohabialuz.com/). Thanks so much to Armando Croda for putting this video together!

Hi all. 2010 was a good year for Balún! We released a mini-album “Memoria Textil“, did a couple of remixes including one for our friend minusbaby, recorded a couple of covers like “Fiesta Permanente” for Fonográmaticos Vol. 10, and did an all acoustic session for Frecuencias Alternas’ “Música Realenga”. We also invited a new member to Balún and he’s now playing drums and pitched percussion with us!

At the end of the year, everyone made their top of 2010 lists and “Memoria Textil” appeared on a bunch of them:

Top 40 Best Albums of 2010 by Club Fonograma

Top 10 of 2010 by Puerto Rico Indie

Favorite albums of 2010 by El Amarillo

Best of 2010 by Tiny Cartridge

Best of 2010 by Mi Abuela es Jazzista (great name btw)

Best of 2010 by Music-Islands (Japan)

Top 100 songs of 2010 by Club Fonograma

Top 80 songs of 2010 by El Amarillo

Also our cover of Pau y Sus Amigos got a mention at one of our favorite blogs Life:Aquatic!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

For 2011 expect new music, another cover of a great Latin American artist, new videos and lots more! We are going to keep working on new songs for our 2nd album too.

And lastly a very cool person made this with our music. Happy 2011!

Club Fonograma just recently released their 10th compilation of the Fonogramáticos series and it’s a very special one! Bands from all over Latin America and Spain covering each other. We fell in love with Pau y Sus Amigos’ “Fiesta Permanente” upon first listen and decided that this was a great chance to show them how much we liked their song. So we did! A lot of other great artists appear in this compilation and you can download it for free!

Also our song “Camila” has been reaching new ears and getting reviews. We are very happy that this song in particular is spreading out more as we feel it synthesizes the sound that we want to capture and that better defines the group as of now. The good people over at Life: Aquatic, International Tapes, Rocktantra, and Flashlight Tag had some beautiful words about the song and we can’t be more happy. And as a bonus Club Fonograma included the song in their Halloween Mixtape.

And to finalize, we got two more reviews of Memoria Textil courtesy of Colombia’s “El Amarillo” and Iowa’s “Their Bated Breath“. Thanks to both sites for taking their time and reviewing the mini-album!

PS. Our sister ambient chamber ensemble Arturo en el Barco released a new EP. Get it at Bandcamp for free.

So once in a while we go off and do some music outside Balún that later ends up in the group. This one is the latest audiovisual collaboration between three of us in the band. La Aldea (The Village) is inspired and accompanied by the sensationalist documentary “Menace of Guatemala” (1934) which focuses on the threat of volcanoes in the Agua area of Guatemala.

This one is an interview after our “set” at the IRMF 2010 in Puerto Rico last May. Long story short we got to play only three songs because of rain and some disorganized dudes. So we had something to say. Also, look who’s back! Andrés! and his words are classic Andrés at it’s best.

We were invited by our friends from Frecuencias Alternas to be part of their Musica Realenga series which takes bands and musicians and asks them to play acoustic versions of their song in unusual settings around San Juan. We performed in manifestation that took part by students, faculty and other supporters from the University of Puerto Rico that at that moment were on a strike that lasted two months and paralyzed the whole public higher education system of the island. For this special presentation our first guitarist Andrés re-joined the band and we played as a quintet for the first time!
